Ali Sharifian - The North &
West Voice - October / November 1996 A
well-educated young Iranian, Behshad Hastibakhsh, was raised and
educated in Canada and works as a translator. He is a
columnist for Atlas (a Persian community paper) and
freelances as a writer for The North Shore News. In a
fax titled "My Thoughts on Civic Elections" that he sent
me he writes: "As a Canadian I am extremely proud to
participate in the upcoming elections". In his opinion
the right to vote is a privilege and November 16th "a day of celebration".
"I encourage my family and all my friends to join this celebration
by exercising their rights, he said. He believes that as
multicultural society, we must be able to address the
socio-economic issues that are important to the ethnic minorities
in our community and "this requires us to encourage their
active participation in the political process".
